Hotel Post: 120 years in St. Anton am Arlberg – Pioneers of winter sport

The Hotel Post in St. Anton am Arlberg is closely associated with the history and the development of the village. When, in September 1884, the world’s longest railway tunnel at that time through the Arlberg massif was opened, the idyllic little mountain village experienced a sudden boom. Carl Schuler decided, therefore, in 1896, to build the Hotel Post – initially for the many summer guests who came to enjoy the glorious mountains of the Tyrol.

With the commencement of alpine skiing at the turn of the century, his decision turned out to be a very wise one. Within a short space of time the village of St. Anton am Arlberg developed into the first hub of this new sport. Many pioneers of the sport of skiing came from the Arlberg region, and the Hotel Post was their first “hangout” so to speak. And, indeed, nowhere else better reflected the unique sporting and social character of St. Anton than the Hotel Post. Its guests included VIPs from around the world, from crowned heads to business magnates to artists.

As a result of this success Walter Schuler, son of the hotel’s original owner, had the Hotel Post converted into a large, modern sport hotel in 1927. The plans were drawn up by none other than the world-renowned architect Clemens Holzmeister and the unique silhouette of the  Hotel Post has been a distinguishing feature of the village of St. Anton ever since.

The hotel was purchased over 30 years ago by the Alber family, who have from the very start, always endeavored to run it in keeping with the old traditions. In accordance with the ever changing times investments were made in order to offer guests a superior level of refined hospitality. The Relax Center with sauna and indoor pool were created, and the frontage was attractively remodeled to include an inviting terrace with retail spaces beneath. Today every part of the hotel offers contemporary comfort without compromising the traditional charm of the original architecture.
